Two things inspired this cute shawl: the crossed stitch I used in my Media Tee, and Bloodstone Yarns beautiful colorways and bases. Oh, and a third thing: I do love a big shawl that wraps, drapes and uses 2-3 skeins from my stash, but I had a hankering to make a “one precious skein of yarn” shawlette.

So here is the Media Shawl, alternating Stockinette stitch with bands of an open work crossed stitch. Hand dyed yarns like Bloodstone Yarns (shown here in Tender Prey in American Beauty) and Barnyard Knits showcase both the yarn and the pattern.

For the Adventurous Beginner/Intermediate knitter, the shawl is worked flat, beginning with a garter tab cast on. The finished measurements are a wingspan of approximately 48” and a center depth of approximately 13.25” after blocking.

Links to video tutorials for the garter tab cast on and the crossed stitch are included in the pattern.

You will need:

  • 400 yards of fingering weight yarn
  • US size 5 (3.75 mm) 40” circular needle The shawl is worked flat; the circular needle is to accommodate the large number of stitches you will have.
  • blocking pins
  • yarn needle
  • Optional: blocking wires
