My Mattie Yoke is a child’s jumper, inspired by the colours and motifs of Taatit rugs. These traditional pile bedcovers of Shetland were made by pulling wool through a base fabric into long loops, then trimming the loops to create a pile. This made for a thick, insulating bedcover for frigid Shetland winters. The wool was dyed with natural dyes and worked into designs and motifs often related to folklore. The Mattie jumper is made from much finer hand-knitting wool and is knitted in stocking stitch rather than looped pile, but it will keep its wearer warm wherever they encounter winter’s cold.

Materials
Jamieson & Smith 2ply Jumper Weight (2ply equivalent to a 4ply/fingering weight); 100% Real Shetland Wool; 115m/25g ball
Yarn A: FC64 (brown/green mix) x 4 (4, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8) balls
Yarn B: 202 (fawn) x 1 (1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1) ball
Yarn C: 122 (rust) x 1 (1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1) ball
Yarn D: 1284 (pink) x 1 (1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1) ball

2.5mm circular needles or DPNs for working body, sleeves and neck rib 3.0mm circular needles or DPNs for working body and sleeves Optional: 3.25mm circular needles or DPNs for yoke – my Fair Isle knitting is slightly tighter than my plain knitting so I choose to go up a needle size for the yoke. Stitch markers (1 in a different colour for beginning of round) Stitch holders or waste yarn

Tension
28 sts and 40 rows to 10cm over stocking stitch on 3.0mm needles
