Massey Cardigan
Crickets chirp in the long grass as the sun slips down towards the horizon. A cool breeze wafts over the meadow, scattering delicate dandelion fluff in a whirling dance. She chases the fluff, determined to catch a wish. “Can I pick just a few more flowers?” she begs. How to resist the pure joy that she finds in the day? She sits, pulling her sweater a little closer around her against the chill, and carefully cradles her treasures.
Massey Cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down with contiguous set-in sleeves (a technique developed by Susie Myers) and a drop shoulder. The sweater features a shawl collar, a lace back panel, and cable panels that travel down the sleeves and open front. Perfect for cool summer days and suitable for your favourite speckle or solid DK weight yarn.
Suggested Yarns: Tanis Fiber Arts PureWash DK (100% organic merino, 260 yd/238 m per 4 oz/113 g), size 6 sample shown in OOAK Starfish on a model with a 25”/63.5 cm chest;
or other DK weight yarn that blocks well and knits up to a gauge of 22 sts and 28 rows = 4”/10 cm in stockinette. Row gauge is very important for this construction, so be sure to pick a yarn that will give you pattern row gauge.
Sizes: 2 (4, 6, 8, 10) to fit a chest circumference of 21-22 (23-24, 25-26, 27-28, 29-30)”/53.5-56 (58.5-61, 63.5-66, 68.5-71, 73.5-76) cm.
Choose a size based on your child’s actual chest circumference and your desired amount of ease. See the schematic on page 11 for finished measurements. The intended fit is a loose fit, and the pattern includes 3-4”/7.5-10 cm of positive ease. If you need to adjust the length of the sweater for a slim child, follow the directions after sleeve separation for the size that gives you your desired final length.
Yardage: 500 (575, 650, 725, 800) yd/460 (525, 595, 665, 730) m.
Suggested Needles:
US 6/4.0 mm; 20”/50 cm circular needles and DPNs, or size needed to obtain gauge;
US 4/3.5 mm; 20”/50 cm circular needles and DPNs, or needles two sizes smaller than gauge needles.
Gauge:
22 sts and 28 rounds = 4”/10 cm in stockinette on larger needles. Please note: row gauge is very important for a good fit with the contiguous sleeve construction.
