Mary’s Shawl is my copy of a 1940’s Shetland Shawl, originally knitted by a family friend. It is a 6-foot square shawl worked in garter stitch. The shawl starts with the lace edge. Quarters are worked by picking up stitches from the lace edge and knitting on, with the centre square knitted on to one of the quarters … grafting completes a seamless shawl.

The some of the lace patterns included are complex but others are more simple, and all have a plain knit row every 2nd row.

Jamieson & Smith or Jamieson’s of Shetland wool yarn is recommended, in either a 2-ply lace weight or a cobweb yarn. The Lace weight yarns need between 17balls and 20balls, the cobweb need 9 or 10 balls of yarn, depending on the yarn you choose.
