Mary Lennox is a classic pi shawl. The very center of the shawl starts with the path to the garden, and perhaps, a key. The shawl progresses past the ivy covered wall, to the inside of the garden. Different flower patterns make up the remaining sections, and each section providing 2 options for pattern options. Different options are included for the final border, which is knitted on sideways.

Stitch patterns are mostly both written and charted. There are a few that are written only.

“It was the lock of the door which had been closed ten years and she put her hand in her pocket, drew out the key and found it fitted the keyhole. She put the key in and turned it. It took two hands to turn it, but it did turn. And then she took a long breath and looked behind her up the long walk to see if anyone was coming. No one was coming. No one ever did it seemed, and she took another long breath, because she could not help it, and she held back the swinging curtain of ivy and pushed back the door that opened slowly – slowly. Then she slipped through it, and shut it behind her, and stood with her back against it, looking about her and breathing quite fast with excitement, and wonder, and delight.
She was standing inside the secret garden.”

The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Sizing
Pattern includes directions for a half circle, three-quarter circle, and a full circle. The border can be worked after finishing a minimum of 2 Garden Charts. A total of 5 Garden Charts are included, and the charts may be repeated at the knitter’s discretion to make the finished shawl bigger. The first three Garden Charts will result in a shawl with a total of about 200 rounds.

Yarn Usage
For the smallest option (170 rows), you should be able to get a half circle shawl from 1 skein (aprox 800 yards), the three-quarter and full circle shawls will need 2 skeins (1600 yards). Working additional Garden Charts will increase the required yardage. These estimates will vary depending on gauge and number of nupps worked.

Gauge
Gauge listed is 4.5 stitches per inch, blocked. The initial pattern includes a swatch which will measure about 7 by 4. It is not imperative that the listed gauge be achieved. Use a needle size that will result in a fabric you like. Bear in mind that significant changes in gauge will impact the final size and yarn usage.

Special Techniques
Pattern includes both nupps and beads. If desired, beads may be substituted for the nupps. About 15 beads are used in Clue 1, but are optional in subsequent clues.

Necessary Items
Circular knitting needles with a good point are highly recommended.
Stitch markers
Crochet hook or dental floss to add beads.
8/0 beads, approximately 15 are needed for Clue 1.
