This lace was meant to edge a rectangular scarf/shawl in 1912 Fleischer’s Knitting and Crocheting Manual, p.169. I added a selvage stitch at the header edge to make a tidier edge for sewing. I also omitted the instructions calling for dropping and unravelling a stitch near the header edge when binding off. I thought I could “simplify” the lace by changing the p2tog to k2tog but the results weren’t nearly as nice as the original pattern: the one-and-a-half yarn over between a knit stitch and the p2tog stitch makes a slightly bigger eyelet and the p2tog stitches make an attractive zigzag column.

There are 10 pattern rows starting with a cast-on of 27 stitches. 8 stitches are slowly added every odd-numbered row until they’re bound off in the 10th row for the next repeat. This pattern is repetitive and predictable in a good way. It was enjoyable to knit.
The swatch is 4.5 inches at its widest at gauge.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, YO twice, k2tog, p2tog and bind off.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

70 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of Martha Washington edging at gauge.
