Mariposa Flip
This pattern began as a challenge from my pastor during his sermon to take a $1 (he was giving them to everyone) and “do good”. You can read more about it here on his blog.
So I decided to invest the $1 in Ravelry advertising for a fast, fun, fabulous scarf pattern donating all the proceeds to a non-profit organization. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I decided we would start with Susan G Komen, but will select other cancer research organizations each quarter. As my mind moved to pink ribbons, a design popped into my head which is rather unusual for me and my design process.
The following week at Stitches East, I tried out the concept. It worked! It was fast and fun to knit and the finished “fabric” was very interesting. As I shared my story with various friends, more and more people got on board with the idea.
- Claudia of Claudia Hand Painted Yarn donated yarn for the samples.
- Kellie (aka Kellamina) and Sarah (aka handknitter) donated their time for photography and tech editing of the pattern.
- Arlis, Beth, Chuck, Claudia, Donna, Edie, Roy, Sandy & Sarah donated additional funds toward advertising.
- Erica of Kollage and Chuck of Skacel each were willing to donate time and yarn to knit samples from each of their company’s yarn.
100% of the proceeds through the end of 2011 will be donated to Susan G Komen. Total donation - $128.26.
2012 proceeds will be donated to Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative as suggested by my knitting friend and cancer survivor Andrea Wong. - Total donation - $15.00
2013 proceeds were donated to Halos of Hope in honor of my friend who survived breast cancer this year. Total donation - $57.50
