MARFA MITTENS

……………………….

’The forest dwellers have their own logic,’ my great-grandfather used to say about the people who came to market from the isolated mountain hamlets. He would notice me looking with curiosity at their unusually presented wares. ‘They do things a little
differently, yes. But it works. There is more than one way to do things you see…’

There is more than one way to do things indeed. Including knitting mittens.

While circular construction seems to be the current standard, the method I was taught as a young girl was flat and sideways. It might seem counterintuitive, but it works - and
lends itself especially well to bulky and textured yarns - which can be
awkward to work around a small circumference in the round, and much simpler and quicker to
knit flat.

Try it for yourself, and discover the logic of the Marfa Mittens… as well as their
exceptional cosiness.
