Mali
From Knitting Out of Africa: Inspired by mud-dyed cotton fabrics produced in the Bamana region of Mali, the body of this intricately patterned pullover is knitted in the round from the hemmed lower edge to the shoulders; extra stitches are cast on for armhole steeks that allow for shaping without interrupting the circular knitting rhythm. The steek stitches are secured, then the armholes and front neck are cut open to accommodate the neckband and sleeves - also worked in the round from the hemmed lower edge to the armhole. Stockinette-stitch facings conceal the raw edges of the cut armholes. The neck is finished with a narrow rolled edge followed by a double-thick neckband.
