Malacatl cowl
Discontinued.
This digital pattern is no longer available online.
Take the flower petals from the Malacatl hat and set them on a straight line; this makes the colorwork pattern for this buttoned neck warmer.
Buttons help the cowl fit snugly, so it is worked in the round and then steeked.
Materials:
- Light fingering weight yarn:
- Color A: 72 yards [66m] of medium shade; I used Jamieson Smith 2 ply jumper weight in Russet (FC38).
- Color B: 60 yards [55m] of dark shade; I used Jamieson Smith 2 ply jumper weight in Dark Chocolate (143).
- Color C: 20 yards [18.5m] of light shade; I used handspun yarn, from an oatmeal-colored Shetland fleece. Jamieson Smith 2 ply jumper weight in Beige (202) would be a good substitute.
- Spinning specifications: unwashed singles: 24 wpi; washed and finished 2-ply yarn: 12 wpi. Grist: 2009 ypp.
- US size 3 [3.25mm] needles for working in the round.
- 3 buttons, 0.5 inches [1.2cm] in diameter.
- Darning needle.
Techniques:
- You need to know how to make a provisional cast-on, knit colorwork in the round, work an i-cord bind-off around a corner, and make a steek. (I used the steek sandwich as described by Kate Davies; any steek style should work.)
- Instructions for i-cord buttonholes are included.
