From Nancy Bush's Pattern Introduction "Maimu Pôldoja is the author of Kudumine, the first Estonian knitting book I studied. I learned many things from this book, among them the nupp (button or bud) stitch, and the fringe cast-on. I have never met Maimu, but have seen much of her knitting, which is truly wonderful. I named these mittens after her beause the cuff is decorated with the nupp stitch. The hand is worked in the pōdrasarvekiri or elk horn pattern, which is so very Estonian with its grid outlining the cross motifs. The thumb has a smaller pattern.
The decorative cuff begins with a double-start cast-on and continues with yarnover braids as well as the nupp stitch. The top of the mitten is shaped with half-wick decreases and the thumb is shaped with a rounded finish.
