Mackintosh Roses
*NOTE: THe Sanguine Gryphon no longer offers this pattern. Until my website is up and running please PM me if you are interested in this pattern.
This pretty floral camisole was inspired by the Scottish-born architect, designer, and artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Celebrated around the world as one of the most creative figures of the early 20th century, he was known for his contributions to the Art Nouveau period and the Arts and Crafts movement. In particular, Mr. Mackintosh’s floral inspired motifs are prominent in much of his design work, most famous of which is known as the Mackintosh rose. Many variations of this rose exist, including my take on a knit i-cord appliqued in a similar rose shape.
This sweater is knit in the round from the top down with the same number of stitches throughout; no increasing or decreasing is necessary since the stitch pattern itself does the shaping.
Rose-shaped cables alternating with columns of slip stitches create a ribbed bodice with a snug-fitting bust. Columns of long stems drop down to alternating small roses and larger, contrasting Mackintosh roses appliqued on the bottom band of the garment. A contrasting bead is sewn into each ring/flower, and I-cord straps hold the camisole in place with contrasting yarn that matches the Mackintosh roses on the bottom band.
Finished measurements for the bust in the schematic are listed according to the size the ribbed bodice can stretch and fit snuggly without distorting the floral motif. Additional sizes are easily achieved by adding a repeat of each chart which adds another 3.25”/8.5 cm to the bust size. Length can be adjusted in the Long Stem section of the pattern.
