Lost River Shawl
A Note About the Cover Image: For a funny and very informative look at the realities of AI, knitting design, and small business, take a look at our Substack post about this pattern’s cover photo. You can find the article, part of our regular WoolTribe Rebel series HERE.
When we found the cabin where we house our WoolTribe studio, we were fascinated. At every turn it revealed new secrets. The winding creek that feeds into the New River. The little nook on the upper deck that keeps you shielded from the mountain winds that sometimes roar through the gaps in the peaks. The phenomenal abundance of hostas that made their appearance during our first spring there. Nature’s textures washed over us at every turn, and inspired this shawl.
Lost River Shawl is an asymmetrical knit. A parallelogram created by consistently increasing on the right edge and decreasing on the left edge, its incredibly versatile shape is truly our favorite among shawl shape options. We also love that this project will allow you to use a single color or create a vibrant piece with many. Although it’s called a shawl, knitting it with sock yarn yields a super cozy scarf, ideal for wrapping around your neck on a cool day. This is an excellent “fall-back” project—easy to take on trips and perfect for filling the gaps between your major Works in Progress (WIPs). Whether you block it to reveal subtle, rippling waves of texture or let it dry naturally for a dense, accordion-like structure, the finished fabric structure is amazing. It uses just under three hundred yards of sock weight yarn - just 280 grams. You can grab a main color, or some featured sidetones, and go with it!
