The winding stitch pattern in the Lorelei Clutch suggests the curves of a river. Lorelei is a water spirit from folklore as well as a famous rock outcropping in the Rhine River. Worked at a tight gauge, the twisting of the Bavarian Traveling Stitches in this pattern help keep the fabric a little denser. This pattern also involves a sturdy type of vertical buttonhole to keep the bag more securely closed. To learn more about these buttonholes, read Special Topics in Finishing in this issue of Cast On.
