Lorelai Beanie
THE INSPIRATION
Lorelai Gilmore - she’s sweet, she’s funny, and she’s a whole mess, but we love to love her. I wanted to design something that she would throw on before heading to Luke’s for yet another coffee, and the Lorelai Beanie was born! This pattern was inspired by the classic style of everyone’s favorite TV mom. Its simplicity makes it a great match for every outfit, and its faux fur pom pom adds a bit of fun to an otherwise basic silhouette.
THE CONSTRUCTION
Knit in the round from the bottom up, the Lorelai Beanie features a cozy double brim for extra warmth. It’s knit in simple stockinette stitch with some basic decreases at the crown, so this pattern is ideal for a beginner who wants to learn how to make hats! The fit is slightly slouchy on smaller heads like mine and more fitted on larger ones, so it is suitable to fit most adults - yep, it’s unisex too! I got the custom 2” x 3” rounded rectangle leather patch with stitch holes from Ridge Leather Co., and I was very happy with the result, so I’d definitely recommend them if you want to put a patch on yours as well!
THE YARN
The yarn I chose for this project is Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Worsted, available from Stars Hollow Yarns (my local yarn shop, and they have an online shop as well!). I love Woolstok because it’s made of a rustic fine highland wool, which is easy to work with and makes such a soft fabric. It comes in two skein sizes - you will need two 50g skeins to make one beanie, or you could get two beanies out of the 150g size. There are many different colors to choose from as well!
MATERIALS
-
Approximately 150 yd (137 m) of worsted weight (4) yarn
-
US size 8 (5 mm) 16” circular knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge) and double-pointed needles in the same size (optional if you use magic loop)
-
Common notions, such as stitch markers, measuring tape, scissors, and a tapestry needle
MEASUREMENTS
Approximately 9” (23 cm) tall and 20” (50 cm) around at the brim. Note that I chose not to block mine so this is an unblocked measurement.
GAUGE
20.5 sts x 28 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch (unblocked)
