In this pattern you are deliberately dropping certain stitches, which creates that lovely openwork check effect. To do it, drop the next stitch off the left needle and allow that vertical column of stitches to unravel down the work until it reaches the Set-up row. Depending on your yarn, you may need to gently tug a few horizontal strands to encourage them to unravel.
