My family loves to ski, and we spend many Winter weekends in Vermont. Long John is the long and winding trail we often use as our first run when we visit Mount Snow resort. The traveling slipped stitch makes its way through the hat in the same fashion that we navigate our way through this gorgeous path. It’s set atop a bed of striped 1X1 rib that makes for a squishy, stretchy fabric that will fit multiple sizes. Whether you ski or sit in the lodge, this hat will keep you cozy and warm!

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Unstretched Finished Measurements:
15 (17, 18)“/37.5 (42, 45) cm circumference
X 6.5 (8, 9.5)”/16.5 (19.5, 26) cm tall for beanie version.
NOTE: Slouchy version will add 1”/ 2.5 cm to hat height.

Three sizes are offered however due to the stretchy nature of this rib pattern, adjusting the length of the rib will allow the hat to fit many size heads.
At least 4”/10 cm negative ease is recommended.

YARN
RECOMMENDED: North Bay Fiber, Elemental Worsted (100% domestic Cormo wool; 205 yd/187 m per
100 g); 1 skein each (MC and CC)
OR Wosted Weight yarn in the following amounts:
MC: approx 58 (75, 108) yds/ 53 (68, 98) m
CC: 51 (66, 95) yds/ 46 (60, 86) m
• First Sample is knit in colors Roe (MC) and Chartreuse (CC)
• Second sample is knit in colors Deep Dive (MC) and Natural (CC)
GAUGE
24 sts and 28 rows to 4”/10cm in chart pattern, blocked and slightly stretched.
Due to the stretchy nature of the K1P1 Rib, for reference, gauge in stockientte is
18 sts and 24 rnds to 4”/10cm.
NEEDLES
Needles listed are suggested.
Always take time to swatch.
• Gauge Needle: #7 (4.5mm) 16”/40cm circular needles, US #7 (4.5mm) DPN OR 32”/80cm circular (for magic loop) to shape crown—or size necessary to obtain gauge
• Smaller Needle: US #5 (3.75mm) 16”/40cm circular needles—or two sizes smaller than Gauge Needle

PATTERN NOTES
• Pattern is written for the smaller size, with the larger size in parentheses.
• Hat is worked in the round, from the bottom up.
• Any time you are changing colors between rounds, if you
are carrying them up, be sure to pick the new color up from behind the old color, crossing the two colors over one another to prevent any holes.
• Fabric created from the stitch pattern is extremely stretchy, therefore this hat may be worn with a varying amount of negative ease.
• Both written directions and charted directions are provided.
• While these directions are quite wordy, there are several ways to intuitively knit this pattern:
• CC rows are worked by maintaining the rib pattern throughout with the exception of the one twisted stitch which is slipped.
• MC rows are worked by maintaining the rib pattern with the exception of the traveling twisted stitch.
