This delicate lace hat makes a beautiful gift for a new loved one in the family.

The lace pattern is simple to get into the rhythm of – it may take a few repeats and a little patience at first, but once you’ve mastered it, it’s such a joy to knit. Like many of my stitch patterns, there’s a row that requires a little concentration followed by a “row off” – a relaxing purl row to let you breathe.

The pattern includes four sizes: newborn, older baby, child and adult, so you can make one for every stage or matching family sets.

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up with one seam.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, yarn overs, lace pattern, decreasing. Joining one seam. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.

YARN
One 50g hank of Merino 150
100% Merino Fine Wool, 150m/164yds per 50g
It takes just under 50g/100m to knit the adult size

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3mm and 3.25mm.

GAUGE (tension)
22 stitches and 38 rows to 10cm square over lace pattern. I obtained this gauge with 3.25mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
To fit newborn, baby, child and adult head. Due to the nature of the rib pattern and individual gauges, the finished circumference can vary from 34cm to 60cm.
If the knitter gets the gauge as above the finished circumference will be approx. 38(44:49:55)cm.
