Liv: Linen Towel
Flax (linen) is not typically a fiber used by knitters, since it spins best at a very fine gauge that is more suitable for weaving. But there are some projects that lend themselves very well to linen yarn—towels, for instance! The inspiration for the surface pattern came from a traditional Swedish image of the Tree of Life, which can be seen in many Swedish designs, from tapestries to grave markers. It symbolizes the family tree, with outreaching branches. Since linen comes from flax, an ancient fiber with a long “family tree,” it seemed appropriate to use this fiber for the basis of this Knit Workshop project. The more the towel is washed in hot water, the softer it will become—although it will also shrink, so take care when washing and expect the final cloth to become quite a bit smaller (perhaps one-third smaller) over time. I added a button loop closure as a means of hanging the towel more creatively.
