In August I was sitting out in the backyard watching my two boys play. The leaves were green and fresh. There was no hint or sign of the golden transformation I knew was coming. I thought it would be so much fun to put into knitted form the journey the leaves make as they go from their summer green to their glorious gilding. So here it is!

The shawl starts out with August leaves – fully green and all filled in. In September the gold starts to grace the edges of the leaves and, thus, you see the leaf chart for September has a few lace elements. By October the transformation is fully underway and the leaves are in their glory. Therefore, the October chart is a complete lace motif. In November the leaves have fallen from the trees and the branches are bare and the lace motif for November mimics bare branches.

Yardage: 410 yards (374 meters) lace weight yarn or 440 (402 meters) fingering weight yarn.
Yarn: Samples knit out of String Theory Caper Sock, 80% Superwash Merino, 10% Cashmere, 10% nylon and Kauni 8/1 Wool Lace, 100% Estonian Wool, Mustard, Yellow, Rusty Brown and Grey and Malabrigo Sock Yarn, 100% Superwash Merino in the Black (195) colorway.

400 yd skeins of fingering weight - please note: String theory Caper Sock only has 400 yards. You can make a modified version with only 400 yds. You will need to work the st st bands as st st and not the garter alternative (garter st uses more yardage), you will need to omit the st st band between the October and November chart (this is noted in the pattern) and you will need to only work rows 1 – 10 of the November chart. The bo numbers for this altered version are given in parenthesis in the bind off.
Gauge:
Lace weight: 6.25 sts / 7 rows over St st = 1 inch, unblocked
Fingering weight: 5 sts / 6 rows over St st = 1 inch, unblocked

Lace weight: US 2 (2.75mm) circulars or size needed to get gauge
Fingering weight: US 4 (3.5mm) circulars or size needed to get gauge
