Lewth
This pattern is available from Payhip via the pattern website linked above, or from LoveCrafts here - priced in Euros.
Lewth is worked sideways from tip to tip increasing as you go to the mid point then decreasing. The textured stitch pattern creates a ‘V’ shape that follows the line/shape of the shawl.
Two sizes are offered in the pattern:
Large (250yds/229m DK yarn)
Wingspan - 63 inches/160 cm
Drop - 17 inches / 43 cm
Small (110yds/100 m DK yarn)
Wingspan - 28.5 inches/72 cm
Drop - 7.5 inches / 19 cm
However, the tip to tip construction makes it ideal if you want to use up whatever quantity of yarn that you have – weigh your yarn at the start, stop increasing when you’re half way through your yarn and then start decreasing. The simple 4 stitch 8 row pattern repeat is ideal for this approach.
’Lewth’ is Dorset dialect for ‘shelter’ or ‘warmth’ which can be found in the poetry of Thomas Hardy and/or William Barnes, who between them have probably done most to preserve the dialect I grew up hearing, but which is now rarely spoken.
