The only thing that can possibly make a skein of self-striping yarn more fun is a coordinating mini skein. I knit these mittens using a “toes and heels” sock set. Since socks are such a popular project for self-striping yarn, dyers often create beautiful little yarn kits that include a solid yarn and a perfectly paired self-striping yarn. The great thing about having a coordinating mini skein for this pattern is that you don’t have to think about what color makes the most sense with your beautiful self-striping yarn—the dyer does it for you. The Leapfrog Mittens use these “toes and heels” sets in a new way. These mittens are knit in the round from the bottom up. The beginning of this project is knit like a traditional mitten, but once you reach the palm, the fun begins. Using short rows, the stripes take a leap and hop right over a fun triangular section of solid-colored yarn.
