Latva is a traditional fitted sweater. It fits tight and follows the body measurements. Latva is designed with masculine body proportions in mind but can be knitted for anybody.

Latva gets its inspiration from the nature – the trees, forests and the waters. The gansey motifs have been used a long time for the fisherman sweaters on the cold waters of the North Sea. The waves of the sea flow from the saddle shoulders to the top of the sleeves in a continuous way. The front is decorated with The Tree of Life. A similar, but smaller tree marks the back. Latva means a treetop in Finnish.

Latva is knitted top down in the round in one piece starting from the double collar. Shoulder flaps are knitted after the collar, and stitches for back and front are picked up from the shoulder flaps. Set-in sleeves are worked at the same time with the back and the front. Sleeves are snug and an easy pattern gives a stretchy fit to the elbows. After dividing the stitches and separating the sleeves at underarm, the body is worked in the round in stockinette with a delicate little pattern to mark side seams. The hem ribbing is divided for back and front, the back is slightly longer. Latva is a sweater for skilled knitters and requires a bit of concentration.

Yarn: De rerum natura Gilliatt, 100% wool (100g = 250 g) colourway Genet, 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8) balls. Total of 1010 (1130, 1310, 1460, 1590, 1710, 1850, 1980) m / 1100 (1230, 1430, 1600, 1740, 1890, 2030, 2170) yards.

You can use any yarn, but this will affect your gauge and the amount of yarn needed.

Needles:
US 6 (4,0 mm) circulars of 40 and 80 cm and dpns if preferred. US 7 (4,5 mm) circulars of 40 and 80 cm and dpns if preferred.
Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers of which one different, stitch holders or waste yarn.

Gauge for stockinette: 18 sts ja 26 rows = 4 inches / 10 cm with US 7 (4,5 mm) needles, blocked. Please make a swatch and select a suitable needle size to get the right gauge.

Latva on perinteinen tyköistuva villapaita. Se seuraa vartalon muotoja ja istuu tiukasti. Latva on mitoitettu maskuliinisen vartalon mittojen mukaan, mutta sen voi neuloa kenelle vain.

Latvan innoittajana on luonto – puut, metsät ja vedet. Gansey-kuvioita on käytetty kauan Pohjanmeren kalastajien paidoissa. Meren aallon jatkavat virtaansa satulaolkapäiltä hihojen päällä. Paidan rinnassa komeilee Elämän puu. Vastaava pienempi puu koristaa selkää.

Latva neulotaan ylhäältä alas yhtenä kappaleena aloittaen kaksinkertaisesta kauluksesta. Olkapoletit neulotaan kauluksen jälkeen. Silmukat etu- ja takakappaletta varten poimitaan olka-polettien reunoista. Istutetut hihat tehdään etu- ja takakappaleiden kanssa samanaikaisesti. Hihat ovat tiukahkot ja helppo mallineule luo joustoa kyynärpäiden kohdalle. Kun silmukat on jaoteltu ja hihasilmukat erotettu kainaloissa, jatketaan vartalon neulomista pyörönä. Pieni mallineule korostaa sivusaumoja. Helman resori jaetaan halkioilla kahteen osaan, joista takaosa on hieman pidempi. Latva sopii taitaville neulojille ja vaatii vähän keskittymistä.

Jos etsit kevyempää villapaitaa, huomioi Puu-villapaita. Se muistuttaa Latvaa, mutta on neulottu ohuemmasta light fingering -langasta.
