Inspiration:
Summer aww….The sun hitting our face, the warm embrace. I am longing for summer. While, pinning for the warm weather to finally grace my home town of Calgary, I came across this amazing yarn. Poof, magic, a perfect summer top. As with most of my projects, the inspiration flows to the surface once the appropriate yarn reveals itself. This yarn by Knit Picks is not only an economical option but provides the airy, drapey quality I needed to pull off this design. As per Knit picks “Capture the spirit of summer with Lindy! Superbly lightweight and endlessly versatile, Lindy is a chainette yarn that is just the thing for warm weather. The linen

“Lato” means summer in the Polish language. I felt it appropriate to use this name to honour my heritage and love for the season.

Sizes:
Bust 32, (34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48) in
Modelled on a bust 36 in with 2 in (5cm) ease at bust.

Gauge:
21 sts/32 rows in 4in/10cm swatch.
Knitted on size 5 US needles (3.75mm) in a k1, p1 pattern. Sample swatch knitted flat and blocked. It is crucial to wet wash the swatch and block it, as this pattern grows substantially width wise.

It is recommended to knit a larger swatch, as a small swatch does not always give a “true” gauge. I recommend knitting the lower back piece and blocking it. Measure gauge on that piece. Proper fit is crucial with a top of this structure.

I knitted the sample using colour-way: Sage bush

Amounts: 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7) balls

Fiber Content: 70% Linen, 30% Pima Cotton
Weight: Fingering 50g 180yards per ball

Notions:
• Size 5 US (3.75) needles, circulars recommended, with an appropriate length cord for specified stitch count (as per size), interchangeable needle set recommended as its helpful to have additional cords,
• Size 5 US (3.75mm) DPN’s,
• Size 4 US (3.5mm) DPN’s or straight or interchangeable circulars for knitting the
shoulder straps
• 2 Stitch holders, if interchangeable needle set is available, the extra cords can be used
instead,
• Darning needle,
• Several stitch markers, at least 6.
• Row counter recommended, optional.

Skills required:
• Knit, purl, decreases, increases,
• Picking up stitches along an edge,
• 3 needle BO,
• German twisted or another stretchy CO method,
• Backwards loop cast on,
• Stretchy bind off.

Notes about construction:
Knitted in 2 pieces, attaching as you progress.
Starting with a lower back, worked flat and horizontally. Stitches are picked up along the top edge of the lower back piece for working the upper back. The upper back shaping is done by binding off stitches along the sides, on right side as well as wrong side. Straps are worked independently, using smaller needles. Once desired length of strap is reached the increases are made for front. Front is attached to the back by picking up stitches along the sides of the lower back piece. Stitches are cast on for the underarm. From this point on, the front is worked as once piece until the “twist section”. Twist is done last by knitting the side pieces longer, adding pleats and later attaching to top front.
It’s not a challenging construct, but somewhat different and unusual as most of my designs.
