Lanastrikkersdottir Shawl/Christmas Tree Skirt
Designed and completed in 3 days, this shawl was designed as a Yarnorama 2015 exclusive release. Please add this design to your ravelry favorites!
This design was inspired when I accidentally happened upon a name while scrolling through the newsfeed on facebook.com. My friend Heidi Stricker Burrowes mentioned her mother, Lana Samuelson Stricker, in a post. Lana means wool, and strikker means knitter. Lana Stricker! Wool Knitter! A knitter with a perfect name! I wrote a short story about the Lanastrikker and her daughter, which inspired this shawl design, LANASTRIKKERSDOTTIR.
I’ve always thought the traditional knitted Shetland shawls and Icelandic shawls were stunning, particularly the work of Sigridur Haldorsdottir and also here and the work of Evelyn Clark. All of these beautiful shawls are KNITTED. My goal was to create one in CROCHET. The shape is almost a complete circle.
The pattern is written and contains many photos of the work in progress. Depending on your yarn choice, it takes between 1500 and 1800 yards of dk weight. If you opt to use worsted weight, the finished shawl is about 1 inch longer (nape to hem) and 3 inches wider (side to side). The shawl will still have a nice drape with worsted weight because of the lace section from the neck to shoulders. Gauge is really not important, and the shawl fits teens to adult. Size H hook.
I used white, black, 3 grays, 3 purples, navy, and green. My color palette was taken from the colors in the vineyard, which is currently under several inches of ice and snow. Look at the pics of the shawls made by the the testers for more great colorways. It will be beautiful no matter what colors you choose!
If you don’t wear shawls, MAKE IT IN CHRISTMAS COLORS AND USE IT AS A CHRISTMAS TREE SKIRT!
Thank you to the fabulous pattern testers, for their beautiful work, tremendous talent, and infinite patience: Leanne Nisha (GumnutCrochet), Margaret Blitzing Richards (Belle9657), Anna Holzberger (nqtroppo), all of Australia, and Gaynor Halls (loverliesgal) who resides in the United Kingdom.
Thanks also to my editor, Andrea Walker (Jitterie)!
