Lady's Openwork Mittens with Thumb
These mitts have a simple yet attractive lace panel running up the back of the hand. Knitted on two needles, the thumb increasing is on the palm side of the thumb only and makes for a simple construction. The seam for sewing is on the palm side of the thumb and best sewn flat (omitting the slip stitch at the start of the rows).
The original pattern requires around 2 ounces of Andalusian wool and UK 16 and 18 needles. No information is given on gauge but a workable modern substitution is 50g of KnitPicks palette and UK 14/2mm/US0 needles used throughout. The wrist welt is tight and UK13/2.25mm/US1 could probably be used. If you feel that the welt is a little tight then you can easily use a size larger needle.
The pattern can easily be adapted to four/five needles to give a more professional finish and avoiding the sewing up.
