Lace Agate
I think there’s something truly beautiful about the layers of colors in rock formations. While researching a few rocks and minerals, I stumbled across an incredible photo of Crazy Lace Agate (pg 4 & 7) I couldn’t believe how it matched my latest shawl design, right down to matching the color of my sample spot on. This top down, crescent shaped shawl is another design where you can get very creative with color choices! I look forward to seeing all the different color combinations!
Difficulty
Intermediate - the main body of the shawl contains knit rows and purl rows. The edging is an easily repeatable cabled lace pattern. Lace Agate is a great knit for experienced lace knitters, and newer knitters with some cabling experience will have fun with this one.
Construction
This shawl is knit top down with increases on both sides to create its crescent shape. When the body is finished, the stitches for the Lace Agate Lace Edging Border are cast on using a cable CO. Then the border is knit back and forth joining the last stitch of every RS row together with a stitch from the main body.
Yarn
The light pink sample was knit with Madelinetosh Sock in the colorway Mars Rover for the MC, and Emma’s Yarn Practically Perfect Sock in the colorway Himalayan Salt was the CC used for the transition & the border.
Dimensions
The shawl measures 20 inches down the center back and about 56 inches at the widest point. These dimensions are indicated in the photo on page 8 of this pattern.
Yardage
You will need 400 yards of a MC fingering weight yarn and 700 yards of a CC fingering weight yarn to make this shawl. I used about 1100 yards total in the pale pink sample.
Gauge
12 stitches and 14 rows / 2 inches in unblocked stockinette stitch
