The name says it all: a way to start a new colour round OR a new colour single-crochet row from the edge of a flat piece, without a bumpy slip knot. Though it’s a single crochet, it can also be used to start a round of taller stitches, where the round will be closed with a slip stitch or invisible join. Check it out!
