“Klänge is the Swedish word for plant tendril; the long, thin organs that vines use to anchor themselves on a wall or other structure. The fine strands of silk stretching out across the surface reminded me of the old ivy covering the eastern wall of our house, stretching its tendrils across and even in through the window. The inspiration for the Klänge scarf mainly came from the challenge of finding a way for three very different yarns to work together, each one showing off their individual qualities, but creating something more than the sum of their parts. Right away, I knew I wanted to use a lace weight together with a DK. The addition of mohair silk was Aimée’s idea and added a bit of softness while also giving the design that extra something.

The rectangular shape means it’s easy to adjust the length to fit any wearer, and the pointed ends together with the squishy I-cord edge gives it a nice, finished look. The ends remind me of the tentacles of a giant squid, a quirky bonus if there ever was one! Knit up in a neutral colourway, this is a classic scarf to match with a tweed jacket for long forest walks, and in a more spunky combination it’s a fun, contemporary piece that goes with any personal style. Fun to knit and easy to wear - two of the things I love in a good project.”

The Klänge scarf is worked from point to point and finished with an applied i-cord all the way around. The scarf begins with a garter-stitch section worked with MC only. Stitches are increased until the final width is reached. Then, CC1 and CC2 are held alongside the MC and worked in a modified stranded colorwork pattern. Once the main section reaches the desired length, a decreasing garter stitch section is worked in MC, to mirror the increased section at the beginning. Finally, an applied i-cord edging is worked all around the scarf using CC1 and CC2 held together. The Klänge stitch pattern may look advanced but is worked over only 2 rows, and you’ll quickly get the hang of it, making this a relaxing and interesting project to work on.
