A one-skein wonder or a two-skein miracle in One or Two Acts by Corrado Lark
The Needs:
- US 6 (4mm) 40” circular needle.
- 1 (2) skeins of Dragon Hoard Yarns Myth Base (75% superwash/25% nylon), 436yd/100g in the “Mamma Mia” colorway.
- Gauge: 18 st. and 32 rows per 4”, blocked. This is a very loose gauge for a light fingering weight yarn, that adds to the drape!
- Finished Dimensions: Small: 63” wide and 28” long. Large: 63” wide and 40” long.
Stitches and Techniques Used:
Knit, purl, casting on and binding off. ( yo, k2tog eyelets used for the large size only). Beginner friendly!
The Backstory:
The design’s title is inspired by the Water/Dragon Pokémon “Kingdra” and the loose, drapey gauge of this design.
Trystan, the dyer behind Dragon Hoard Yarns, is one my favorite knitters to watch of my generation. I love that more and more of us millennial’s are picking up knitting every day, and she’s one sick knitting influencer.
So when we became cyber friends and then got to hang in real life at VKL19, I was super surprised when she and her mom each gave me a skein of their hand-dyed yarn. Both skeins are gorgeous!
Christy, Trystan’s mom, then asked for me to design something for her Suicide Prevention Month awareness project “December of Designers”, and I was honored to be able to do so and give back to a great cause.
I ended up designing a one-skein shawl with the yarn Trystan gave me, then had the idea for a large version that would take a second skein, adding a simple eyelet pattern. In a way, it’s two entirely different shawl patterns in one.
There are no increases in this shawl. Instead, you cast on as you go to get a trapezoid.
The small size works great as a scarf or light shawlette, and the large is definitely more of a “traditional” shawl. Both are knit until you have no yarn left, and you’ll absolutely want to cast the other size soon after!
The pattern was test knit through Yarnpond.com.
