Killarney Stripe Washcloth
This diagonally striped dishcloth is a simple knit of two row garter stitch stripes. Although the pattern calls for a sport weight yarn, the dishcloth/facecloth can actually be worked in any weight yarn.
The construction is easy - cast on for one corner and work the first half by increasing at the beginning and end of every wrong side row. After reaching the middle, begin decreasing at the beginning and end of the wrong side rows to work down to the last corner.
Finished Measurements: 7½“/19 cm square
Required Materials: 40 yds/36 m each of two sport weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn (#2 fine)
Yarn Used in Sample: Blue Sky Fibers Skinny Cotton (100% organically grown cotton; total 150 yds/137 m per 65 g) in two contrasting colors, 1 each.
This pattern can be used with any weight of yarn and needles of the recommended size for that yarn or slightly smaller. Just follow the increasing section directions until the diagonal side edges measure 7½“/19 cm or your desired size. Work the next stripe even and begin decreasing with the following stripe.
• Using a yarn thinner than dk weight will require more stitches and more yarn that the recommended yardage/meterage.
• Using a yarn thicker than dk weight will require fewer stitches and less yarn than the recommended yardage/meterage.
Supplies: US #4/3.5 mm needles, or size to obtain gauge, tapestry needle
Gauge: 22 sts and 44 rows to 4”/10cm in garter stitch using size US #4/3.5 mm
Note: Two contrasting colors of yarn are used – colors A & B. Color A will be slightly more dominant as it is used for the cast on, center stripe and bind off. It will also use slightly more yarn.
