Like silhouettes behind a sheer curtain, stands a little bit of history on my window sill. A plant that with its white blossoms and dark green leaves reminds me of the persistence of nature, and of its fragility if not taken care of: my grandmother’s geranium. Seeing it there, behind the linen curtain, with its shy - but promising - buds, inspired me to create this sleeveless shirt. The linen yarn is also a reminder of how something as seemingly delicate and fragile as flax can create something so strong. In choosing this yarn, I wanted to cast light on how little nature demands of us, but how much it gives back. By gentle watering, occasionally fresh new soil, opening up that curtain from time to time to let the sunlight in, I am rewarded with a blooming bit of nature and history on my window sill. As was my grandmother. As will my daughter.

The garment is seamless, knitted top down and intended to be worn with a positive ease. Start by knitting the collar and fold it to create the draw-string channel. Using increases, knit the shoulder part back and forth until the width is correct. Knit the front part separately, and then the back. Once they are done, join the two parts and continue knitting the body in the round. A picot edge ends the garment, creating a slightly bohemian fringe effect.

The suggested yarn weight equals fingering weight. For the original design, two strands of lace-weight linen yarn, held together throughout the work, were used.
