From Nancy Bush's Pattern Introduction These mittens are named for Kalev… who is one of the Estonians I have the opportunity to meet with on a regular basis. He has helped me translate difficult technical texts and has learned more about knitting than I’m sure he ever wanted.

The pattern used here is the very traditional oaōiekiri or bean blossom pattern from Rapla. The cuff begins with a Continental cast-on and is followed by a k2, p2 corrugated ribbing and a yarnover lateral braid. The top of the mitten ends with a one-wick decrease, as does the thumb, which is worked in a single broken-stripe pattern.
