These mittens were inspired by the thick woven, woollen coverlets (raanu’s) of the north. These are warm and toasty because they are made using stranded knitting throughout.

Stranding throughout means that your gauge will remain the same for the stripes and for the background and the stranded knitting provides a good, stable canvas for embroidery.

Materials for the knitting:

Fingering weight of 4ply wool, approximately 300m (330yds) for the main color and 30m (33yds) each of contrast colors 1 and 2.

I used Finnwool and Estonian Evilla wool.
Other possibilities would be Kauni and various Shetland style fingering weight wools.

Stitch markers, darning needle

Crewel Wool
(I used crewel wool from Renaissance Dyeing and Appleton.)

Sharp embroidery/crewel needle in size 9 or 10
Applique needle size 10 for basting
Sewing thread for basting
