The central cable panel for these socks is modified from Elsebeth Lavold’s ‘Viking Patterns for Knitting’. This in turn is an interpretation of cabling/knotwork from a helmet found in York. In the late 9th century and first half of the 10th century, Northern England was dominated by Norse warrior-kings, and Jorvik was their name for the capital city of the region (now known as York).
These socks are knit toe-up using the magic loop. The cable design is charted.
