Create a perfectly-fitting pair of socks to showcase your favourite skein of yarn!

Skill level: Intermediate

Sizes: XS S, M, L, XL

Yarn requirements: Any skein of 4-Ply sock yarn would be suitable (referred to as yarn A). I recommend a 75% wool, 25% Nylon yarn. If you would like to do your heels, toes and cuffs in a different yarn/colour, a 20g mini skein is also required (referred to as yarn B).

Recommended yarn: Handmade by Joe ‘That Basic Sock Base’ , West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 Ply

Meterage: 300 350, 400, 450, 500 m

Tension (main edc pattern): 22 sts x 21 rows = 10cm x 10cm

Tension (dc pattern for toes and heels): 32 sts x 38 rows = 10cm x 10cm

Hooks used: 3.5mm, 2.5 mm

Other supplies: Darning needle

Terminology: UK

Tips: If your foot size is at the bottom end of a sizing bracket (for example UK womens 5 in S) , it might be worth altering your tension to 23 sts x 22 rows for the main edc pattern for a tighter fit.

Special Stitches:

Extended dc (edc): Insert hook into st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through one loop on hook, yo, pull through both loops on hook.

The edc stitch is quite stretchy/springy. I would recommend keeping the stitches as loose and springy as possible whilst still being able to obtain gauge.

Abbreviations:
Ch = chain
Sl st = slip stitch
Dc = double crochet (US sc)
Htr = half treble crochet (US hdc)
RS = right side
WS = wrong side
Yo = yarn over
Dc2tog = Double crochet 2 together

Notes:

  • You can find photo tutorials at the end of each section. The photo tutorials are not size specific so should only be used as a reference point for certain techniques and tricky rounds.

  • The stitch counts are shown in blue italics throughout.

  • This pattern should be used as guideline for a good-fitting pair of socks. However, everyone’s feet are different, even if you are the same size as somebody else! Take advantage of the measurement instructions in this pattern (e.g. crochet until you are …. cm from tip of toe) to obtain a better fit.
