This is a reproduction of a gansey worn by a herring gutter on the Orkney island of Stronsay about 1910. She is thought to have been called Jess. It is unusual in that every panel across the front of the gansey is different. The gansey is knitted in the round from the hem up. At the armholes, the body splits and the front and back are knitted separately. The shoulders are grafted and the neck is then worked in the round. The sleeves are then picked up from the armholes and knitted in the round down to the cuffs.

Note - Interweave seem to be omitting Charts A, B and C from their patterns. I have added those charts here.

For the short sleeve version:
1(1, 2, 2) 500 g cones Frangipani yarn (100% wool)
For the long sleeve version:
1(2, 2, 2) 500 g cones Frangipani yarn (100% wool)
For both versions:
2.5 and 3 mm (US 2 and 3) circular needles or dpns
thin needle for picking up stitches
row counter
stitch markers
