Jane's Honeycomb Brioche
Here’s a Victorian version of honeycomb brioche from 1841 London in The Lady’s Assistant for….Knitting, Netting, and Crochet Work (also known as The Lady’s Work Book) by Mrs. (Jane) Gaugain. Honeycomb brioche has the appearance of 2 layers and makes a thick, cushy knitted fabric perfect for scarves and afghans.
Jane’s version has 4 pattern rows and a 3-stitch repeat + 2 selvage stitches. This pattern needs careful working as the next stitch to work is often under the yarn over and it can be difficult knowing which to work first: see pattern notes. There are no purl stitches and no knitting-in-the-stitch-below in this version. There are also many videos on YouTube demonstrating how to work honeycomb brioche.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, YO, k2tog and bind off.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
57 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of a 29-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
