It's Cold Outside
When I couldn’t find a simple, child-sized hat knit in super bulky weight yarn, I worked up a pattern of my own. Since I’ve already done the math, I extended it a bit for a few more sizes and figured I’d post the pattern for anyone who wants a super warm, super soft, and super simple hat. Each size will fit a variety of heads (it’s bulky enough to fit a smaller head snuggly but has enough stretch for a larger head). The hat is easily customized as well: if you prefer a roll brim hat, knit for the same length but eliminate the ribbing; if you prefer a beanie to a folded brim, knit a shorter ribbing and/or for less distance before the decreases.
EDIT: Because my husband asked for a hat just like his son’s and daughter’s, I added a 4th size (adult large). Also, the pattern was written to provide a lot of overlap in the folded back brim, to give ears double coverage. If you like less of a brim, you can take an inch or so off the length.
