IRL = in real life
This simple, textured bandana cowl was inspired by my IRL shawl. I wanted a smaller version that would stay on and look great on everyone. This pattern is fun and easy to make, and super easy to wear. I worked with Sarah of Sea Change Fibers to create this pattern, with generous yarn support. I used non-superwash yarn to give my cowl a little bit of structure, but this pattern will work great with any bases and fibers. Sometimes we have to work with what we have, and this one-skein-wonder is perfect for that special DK skein in your stash!
This squishy bandana cowl is seamlessly worked from the bottom point up, starting with an i-cord tab cast on, working flat, casting on back neck stitches and then joining in the round. Easy to customize the circumference following simple instructions.
Written for DK but will also work with worsted weight yarn!
For results that look most similar to the sample, choose a tonal or solid colorway on a non-superwash or more rustic yarn base with similar yardage that feels comfortable against your skin. Any yarn, however, will result in a beautiful cowl! Lighter colors will show off the patterning better. Superwash yarns will have more drape, non-superwash yarns will have more structure. Variegated yarn will look beautiful, but you will lose some of the detailing if it’s dark or full of contrast. I recommend starting with a full 100g skein of yarn, as tester yardage varied.
This project does not require swatching!
