Inverness Ridge
Columns of an intriguing cable-and-lace pattern separated by wedges of stockinette radiate out from one end of these elongated trapezoid shawls, written in two versatile sizes. Simple increases build width in the stockinette sections to shape the shawl, which grows gradually over its 62 (83)”+ of length. Luxuriously warm, delicately textured, and in a practical, versatile shape, this shawl is full of possibilities: the small version makes a great transition-season piece, while the large version will keep you warm even in deep winter. Inverness Ridge makes a wonderful showcase for a standout yarn with a lot of drape, preferably with a high degree of silk or alpaca content, like the lovely, indulgent Galler Alpaca that inspired the pattern.
Pattern Information
Yarn: Galler Prime Alpaca (100% Baby Alpaca, 660 yards / 604 meters per 227 grams / 8 oz), 1 (2) skeins, or 660 (1100) yards / 604 (1005) meters of light DK or heavy sport-weight yarn. Samples knit in “Silver” and “Navy Blue.” (Note on yarn substitution: this yarn is labeled a DK, but I find it knits up at what I’d consider a solidly sport-weight gauge. You can knit Inverness Ridge in yarns ranging anywhere from fingering to worsted weight, but gauge will affect finished size and also how the stitch patterning “reads” from a distance.)
Sizes: Small (Large): 9” / 23 cm at short end, 25 (29.5)” / 63.5 (75) cm at wide end; 62.25 (83)” / 159 (211) cm long after blocking.
Gauge: 22 sts / 28 rows per 4” / 10 cm in cable-and-lace pattern, as charted, AFTER BLOCKING.
Needles: 24” / 60 cm or longer circular needle, or long straights, in size US 3 / 3.25 mm, or size needed to obtain gauge. Note: circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts.
Notions: stitch markers; cable needle (optional); tapestry needle.
Skills required: cabling with or without a cable needle; increasing; decreasing.
