I began this design with the cable pattern at the neckline, which reminded me of two hearts intertwined with a central cable. I designed all the other cables to flow into and out of the neckline cables. I used small cables for the ribbing at the hems and continued the central one up the front into the neckline. On the back, two of the cables run in parallel and then diverge to meet the front cables at the shoulders. Crossing the front and back body cables every 6 rows rather than 4 minimized the tightening of the row gauge and consequent shrinkage of length at the center front and back. The cables are mirrored on the two sleeves. I chose a light-colored yarn to show off the intricate cables; the springiness of the merino allows the cables to stand out in relief. The soft yarn makes this sweater a cozy and elegant addition to any wardrobe.

The sweater is worked flat, bottom-up, with set-in sleeves. The front, back, and sleeves are sewn, and the neckband is worked in the round by picking up stitches.
