A colorful picture of life in the ocean, featuring octopus, seahorse, jellyfish, sea squirt, and assorted little fish and seaweeds.

This is an experienced level intarsia-in-the-round pattern, knitted back and forth in rows using w&t technique. It assumes that you are an experienced intarsia knitter and so no instructions are given for when to join in new colors, or lengths of yarn to use. In some areas you may need to use stranded colorwork technique.

Instructions are given for head sizes 20” (51 cm), 21” (53 cm), 22” (56 cm), and 23” (58 cm). These correspond to extra-small, small, medium and large adult sizes.

Fingering weight yarn
Band: 22-28 yds (20-26 m)
Hat body MC (background color): 70-100 yds (82-91 m)
Ocean inhabitants: 2-10 yds each.

Choosing colors for colorwork knitting: Sometimes our eyes see colors as quite different but once they are knitted together, the pattern does not show up well. One way to test whether a color combination will work is to photograph the yarns in grayscale. If the grays are similar in density then it will not be a good combination.
