I designed this hat as Christmas presents for my sister’s family—a total of four hats. I liked it so much I made one for myself and then another one with a fold-up bottom band. (This has been a particularly cold winter.) It can be customized in several ways. The sample shows a slouch hat, but by omitting the final repeat, it becomes a beanie. You don’t need extra warmth at the bottom? Don’t work the double band.

Note the sizing and gauge statements include the statement “unstretched.” This type of stitch pattern pulls in quite a bit. I did not want to wet block the hats and stretch them out. They will fit better if they can stretch to fit the head when worn.

If you work the largest size, you will need to get an additional skein of yarn if you want to make a pompom, but High Desert Sport is sold in both 100g and 50g skeins.
