Inge Slippers
Inge Slippers
Slippers are my favorite present to knit for someone. It’s like giving hygge and comfort to my friends and family. This is my 23rd slipper pattern, and I have to say that I love it! This slipper is full of symbolism. It’s a knitted love note, with secret hopes and dreams worked in to every stitch. II hope you love making this slipper for your loved ones (and that includes making a pair for yourself). This slipper can be made for men or for women. My grandfather’s great grandmother’s name was Inge. Inge is often a name used for men in Norway, but sometimes it is used for women too. Inge means under the protection of Ing. Ing was orginal name of the god Freyr (and the legendary ancestor of the Swedish Royal Family). Ing was the god of prosperity, kingship, sunshine and fair weather and was also the fertility god who could gift peace and pleasure upon mortals. I think that being under the protection of Ing would be a very good thing.
The design for Inge is filled with well wishes. The squares represent peace and harmony. The heart in the rosette represents love, understanding, gentleness, goodness, happiness, and courage. The St. Andrew’s cross in the center of the rosette represents humility. Little stars on the bottom of the sole remind us to let our light shine, and that with a sky full of stars, we can see on the darkest of nights. The knot on the heel represents bound energy and everlasting harmony. Just imagine if we could focus all our energy on peace, love, understanding, gentleness, goodness, happiness, and courage. And if we humbly let our light shine and join our light with others, we would fill our world with light, hope, harmony, and joy.
