Sashiko was introduced to me by my friend, Naeko. A form of Japanese embroidery, it’s often worked in white or light blue on Indigo fabric. Sashiko ( translation: “little stabs” ) is a method of making common clothing more decorative and reinforcing well-worn clothing to extend the life of the fabric. Centuries ago, indigo was the least expensive dye, so that was the most used base color for peasant clothing. In practice for nearly 500 years, it shows us the concept of recycling is not new. Clothing items too tattered to repair were turned into other useable objects: futons, blankets etc… I am NOT an expert on Sashiko, I do love incorporating beautiful motifs from around the world in my work.

I have adapted some of the motifs to knit. All charts are slightly different to accommodate sizes and stitch counts. Extra Small does not have the 7 row border the other sizes have.
Four sizes are included. Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large. Medium Size shown in photos.
Always choose size to knit based on desired circumference.
