An unusually colorful ear of Indian corn inspired a dye pot. The yarn turned out to be as beautiful as that ear of corn, then one thing led to another… and the yarn dyed in Indian corn colors became a hat and a scarf, patterned like corn kernels.

NOTE: The scarf is knit the long way.

SIZE
Width: About 8.5” (21.5 cm).
Length: 60” (152.5 cm), not including fringe.

YARN
About 425 yards (389 m) of worsted-weight yarn in corn colors. Plus about 50 yards (46 m) of sport-weight or fingering-weight yarn in a light color for husk fringe. The scarf can also be made using a sport-weight yarn in two colors (golden yellow with orange brown) to achieve a corn-color combination. Work with yarn doubled (2 strands held together as one) if using sport weight.

The sample is knit with Morehouse Merino 3-Strand in Indian Corn Color, 3 skeins.
Lace-weight yarn is used for fringe, 1 skein.
The husk-colored fringe … complement[s] the warm colors of the yarn.

NEEDLE
Size 7 or 8 (4.5 or 5 mm): 29” (73.5 cm) circular needle (or longer). The scarf is knit lengthwise, and a circular needle will accommodate the number of stitches more comfortably than straight needles.

OTHER MATERIALS
Tapestry needle.

GAUGE
14 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) in seed stitch pattern (but gauge is not crucial).
