Not only is In the Pavilion beautiful, it is functional too. This crochet hand fan stirs up quite a breeze on a hot summer day, and will make you feel like the belle of the ball. Fold it up and pop it in your bag, or keep it open on display.

The fabric of the fan is crocheted in one piece and then threaded onto the spines of the fan frame. The ends are glued to the large spines on each end of the frame from which the paper has been torn away. Folding hand fan frames vary in their number of spines, therefore this pattern is written with repeats. Count the number of inside spines (usually thinner than the outer spine on each end of the fan frame) and crochet that number of repeats. The sample shown has 22 inside spines. We do not recommend using fans with more than 30 spines, which form greater than a half circle arc.

Additional materials needed:

• wooden or bamboo folding fan with paper removed after purchase (I usually buy mine at a dollar store, at flea markets, or in our city’s Chinatown).
• tapestry needle
• carpenter’s or wood glue
• small clamps (2)
