When winter draws towards a close in northern Michigan, the US Coast Guard sends icebreaking ships through the frozen straits to clear the shipping lanes. These large ships break through the thinning ice, leaving flowing water and large chunks of ice in their wake. Here I have illustrated this in stitches, with columns of flowing stockinette cables and floating bobbles peeking out from a reverse stockinette stitch background.

This hat is knit in the round from the bottom up.

Finished Measurements: 18.25 (19.75, 21.25)”/ 45.5 (49.5, 53.5) cm circumference x 9.5” / 24 cm tall, with brim folded in half.
For a traditional snug fit, choose a size with approximately 2” of negative ease.

Yarn: 190 (210, 218) yards / 173 (192, 199) meters worsted weight yarn.
Please note, an entire skein is used for the large size. If knitting this size, please consider purchasing an extra skein for insurance.
