The Hummingbird Shawl is a side-to-side construction shawl, designed to show off the amazing colors in the Freia Shawl Balls. It can be worked with just one skein of fingering weight yarn, as shown here, or use two for an even longer shawl! As long as you have a scale that can weigh smaller weights (such as a kitchen scale), you can even use any yarn weight you’d like! <3

The Hummingbird Shawl was originally designed for The Fiber Gallery for the 2024 Puget Sound LYS Tour.

Materials

Yarn

Freia Merino Fingering Shawl Ball (100% US Merino Wool; 430yds/393m/100g)

1 ball in colorway Dirty Hippie

or a total of 430yds/393m of fingering weight yarn

Needles

US 4/3.5mm - 32”/80cm circular needle

Or size to obtain gauge.

This shawl is easily adapted to use any weight. If substituting yarn weight or brand yarn, I would recommend size US4/3.5mm for fingering weight (as written), called for needle size for sport weight or heavier, and size US2/2.75mm for lace weight.

Notions

Tapestry needle, 2 stitch markers, removable stitch marker or progress keeper (optional)

Gauge

25 sts x 32 rows = 4” x 4” 10cm x 10cm in Lace Stitch, blocked.

Please note that this pattern is very flexible and can work with any gauge. A change in gauge will result in different finished dimensions and yardage requirements.

Finished dimensions

72.5”/184cm wide x 13”/33cm deep (as written, using one skein of the Freia Shawl Balls)
